Factional tensions erupt in Kolkata CPI(M) over Rupa Bagchi's removal from district leadership

A serious dispute has emerged within the Kolkata unit of the CPI(M) following the removal of senior leader Rupa Bagchi from the newly formed district editorial board. The development came to light during the district committee meeting held on Sunday, where a section of party members objected to her exclusion. Bagchi, a veteran leader and former MLA from Maniktala, was not informed in advance about her removal, according to party insiders.

Rupa Bagchi was replaced by Shamita Chowdhury from Behala East. The Kolkata district leadership stated that Bagchi was removed due to health-related issues and her inability to remain actively involved in organisational work. However, several members questioned the move, pointing out that Bagchi was recently inducted into the CPI(M)'s state committee, indicating her continued relevance in party affairs.

The matter led to a heated exchange during the meeting, which was attended by CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammed Salim. Sources present at the meeting said Salim expressed surprise and dissatisfaction over the way Bagchi was dropped. Discussions reportedly continued for a significant period, reflecting growing differences within the district unit.

Party sources claimed that Bagchi had raised questions in recent months regarding the handling of internal issues. One such issue involved allegations of sexual harassment against a young leader, which she reportedly opposed openly. A section of the party believes these developments may have influenced her removal, though no official explanation beyond health reasons was provided by the leadership.

Rupa Bagchi has been associated with the CPI(M) for several decades. She served as an MLA from Maniktala in 2006 and was the leader of opposition in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Known for her organisational experience and active role in women's issues within the party, her removal from the editorial board without prior communication has created dissatisfaction among her supporters and sparked debates within the Kolkata unit of the CPI(M).
